What if NASCAR Ran a Dirt Race?

Posted by Genna | Posted in , , , , , | Posted on 9/14/2009

Nothing can possibly be more fun or exciting than watching NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers beating and banging on each other. Especially when they run a dirt track.

Now picture this. A full field of Cup drivers, plus one, racing on a dirt track similar to Eldora. For points.

While viewing the Prelude to the Dream that Cup driver Tony Stewart holds at his racetrack, Eldora Speedway, in Ohio, I had a thought. How fun would it be if NASCAR added a dirt track race to the schedule? I mean, just chew on that thought for a moment. They already run on all sorts of tracks. Short tracks, super speedways, intermediate, and even two road courses have been worked into the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule.

I know a lot of people seem to think that it would be highly difficult for NASCAR to run a Cup race with those cars on a dirt track. There’s too many cars or there are drivers out there not experienced enough to run on such a track. Excuses, excuses! Think about this for a moment, NASCAR Cup teams have brought in what they call “road course specialists” to run the courses. Why not do something like that for a dirt track?

Most of the drivers out there are versatile and experienced enough that they could easily run a dirt track race and not run the risk of wrecking on lap one. Many of the Cup drivers have come from dirt track roots and would probably enjoy seeing something like this on the schedule.

But how can it be done? Well, let me tell you…

My first thought is to allow an extra car to qualify for the race. 44 cars would even out the field and allow NASCAR to run two main events with the same amount of cars.

Secondly, how would qualifying work? Well that’s simple, I personally say do the qualifying like they do the Duels at the beginning of the season. Only break up the field into four heat races, eleven cars in each race. Ten or fifteen lap races wouldn’t do, so I would say, depending on track size, the races should be anywhere from 25 to 30 laps.

The first two heat races would qualify for the first main event. The second two heat races would qualify for the second main event. This would put 22 cars into each of the two main events. The two main events should be around 60 to 80 laps each.

When the two main events are finished, just to add in some extra fun, the top 20 cars from each race should run a 25 lap shoot out.

You may be saying at this point that it seems like a lot of racing for one day and well that is probably true. I say put the four qualifying heat races on a Friday, the day before the Cup race. It would be just like any other Cup weekend with qualifying held the day before. Then of course, the main races should always be held at night with the A Main, B Main, and the 25 lap Shoot out being run on a Saturday night.

Crazy?? Quite possibly. But I think the majority of you would love to see NASCAR return to its roots by running some good old fashioned dirt track races.

NASCAR Top 12 in Points Arranged by Attractiveness

Now I realize this is superficial, fangirlish, and a little on the obsessive side but I like to have fun when I write. These are also based solely on my own opinion. If you don’t like it, well honestly, I don’t care.

12. Kurt Busch – Now I don’t know how anyone can find this face attractive. I mean his ears stick out, his cheeks look make him look like a little packrat. Ever seen him when its raining? Then he’s a drowned packrat.

kurt-busch

11. Denny Hamlin – Only two words can describe this picture: deranged psychopath. Sexy. Or not. Sometimes, he has this element of ugly cuteness but then others he looks like…well this:

hammy_rich

10. Mark Martin – Ok, so he’s one of the greatest drivers of all time. Definitely one of my faves. I adore him but let’s face it, pointy nose, wrinkly skin, and that icky 50 year old 6 pack he’s got. It’s just kinda gross.

marky

9. Brian Vickers – The dude looks like a leprechaun. Pointy ears, goofy grin and all. He’s sweet and soft spoken but the guy’s attractiveness level has just plummeted since his Garnier days in 2006. Can we please have Gillette Brian back? Kthnx.

bv

8. Carl Edwards – I’m so going to get shanked for this but I don’t care. My blog, my opinions. I just don’t find this man all that good looking! He honestly looks like he could use some braces. And I say that with the greatest respect. I’ll give him this. He has very pretty eyes.

carly

7. Jeff Gordon – Pretty eyes, nice facial features and looks downright sexy when he poses for Halston ads but he has NO LIPS. Just look!

jeffy

6. Juan Pablo Montoya – Cute, short, angry little Hispanic man. Need I say more?

juan-pablo-montoya

5. Kasey Kahne – He’s so precious and sweet, like a little China doll! Sometimes I wonder what a guy that’s so pretty is doing driving race cars! He could be a Backstreet Boy or a model.

kahne

4. Ryan Newman – Sure he’s a little chubby and one of his nicknames is No-Neck Newman, but he’s got the sweetest little smile! And his eyes dance when he laughs. He has a great personality and sense of humor. What’s not to love?

newman

3. Greg Biffle – He may not be the most photogenic guy on the circuit, but he sure is good looking. With pretty, sparkling blue-grey eyes and a killer smile, the few photos of him that come out looking good are so worth it.

And could we lay aside the braces jokes for a few moments?

2008 Sprint Cup Series Talladega

2. Jimmie Johnson – Except for a brief period of time where he grew out his beard and then proceeded to let several children all under the age of 10 shave his head, this man is one of the sexiest men I’ve ever seen. He really could use a brow wax though. Just sayin’.

Of course he cracks me up with his antics. I think if he hadn’t pissed me off in 2006 when he won the Daytona 500, I’d probably be a big fan.

jimmieissexy

1. Tony Stewart – Sexiest man in the Chase. And as you can see, it isn’t just looks I am going by here. A great personality also helps. I don’t care if he’s chubby, I kinda like them on the chubby side. Tony has chocolate brown eyes that could melt the polar ice caps and is basically one of the funniest men ever. Even if he is inclined to grab men’s behinds.

14 Stewart’s Lucky Number?

It took all of 14 races for Stewart-Haas Racing’s owner/driver to win his first NASCAR Sprint cup points race. It is a well known fact that Tony Stewart is never very good or consistent in the first half of the season. He’s proven everyone wrong by pulling the 14 car into Victory Lane twice this season already, the first time being at the NASCAR All Star Race in May.

Call it a fuel mileage win if you will but all that matters is that Tony has got that first win out of the way. Now he can focus on running top five every week, winning more races, and getting that championship trophy in November.

"I didn't think he was going to be a factor," Edwards said of Stewart. "I was sure he was going to run out."

He was probably counting on Stewart to run out of fuel there at the end. Edwards placed second to Stewart with David Reutimann, Jeff Gordon, and Ryan Newman rounding out the top 5.

Edwards and Gordon were also low on fuel with only Reutimann and Newman projected to make the final laps.

When asked what his fuel strategy was, Stewart retorted, laughing “I’m not telling!”

Other drivers, however, lost the fuel mileage game. Mark Martin had to pit late in the final green flag run for fuel and Jimmie Johnson ran out but managed to coast to the checkers in 7th place.

What is even more amazing about Stewart’s win is that he did it in a backup car from a 43rd starting position. His splitter was ripped off in a practice session on Saturday. Still he remained optimistic that his team and car were good enough to not only get to the front but to contend for the win. Within the first 30 laps of Sunday’s race, the 14 car had broken into the top 10. Still, Stewart took little credit for his performance on Sunday.

"Breathe easy, boys, we're gonna make it," Stewart radioed to his crew as he rolled through the final corner. "God, I'm proud of you guys. You make me look like a genius in here."

In attendance was Tony’s father, Nelson Stewart, who was seen to be shedding a few tears on his way to Victory Lane to celebrate with his son.

Tony Stewart now leads the points standings by 71 points. He gained the lead after last Sunday’s race at Dover. This is also the first win by an owner/driver since Ricky Rudd won at Martinsville in September of 1998.

A name which will live in Infamy: Billy Bad Butt

In case you missed it, which its likely you did, there was an interesting off track incident between Tony Stewart and David Reutimann. The conversation itself wasn’t really all that bad. In fact, it appeared that Tony and David were having a very civil conversation. Everything appeared civil until Tony began walking away, that is.

That’s when Billy Bad Butt (Real name: Dwayne Bigger) decided to step in and take matters into his own hands.

Oh sure, it was all fun and games until I got online and I saw this:

http://billybadbutt.blogspot.com/

Yeah. He has a blog now. And t-shirts. Its fascinating what people can market these days!

Love him or hate him, you have got to hand it to Billy Big Butt, he’s accidentally stumbled upon a goldmine!

Tony Stewart: 14 In Victory Lane- FINALLY.

A lot of us Tony fans knew it would happen, eventually. We waited for it, betted on it, and held our breath each week but I don’t think any of us were really expecting when and where it did happen.

Of course, that’s just Tony! When he wins, he does it in a BIG way. Saturday night’s race at LMS was no different.

I am not really interested in recapping the race, which I watched twice, but I do want to point out a few highlights before I discuss my feelings and thoughts on Tony’s huge victory.

Sam Hornish Jr. and Jamie McMurray – They put on quite a show in the Sprint Showdown, for sure! I wasn’t even sure Jamie could race his way in but boy did he prove me wrong! And how about that Sam Hornish? He pretty much dominated the second half of the showdown.

Joey Logano – And you thought he didn’t have fans!! I was so happy to see my favorite rookie, Joey, get voted by the fans into the All Star Race. Even better was when he finished 8th place- better than half the field! He really showed everyone what he is made of and proved that he deserves to be where he is. Way to go Joey!

Matt Kenseth – As you probably know, I love Matt! It was awesome to see him up there really contending for the win and putting on a great show. I think most of us wondered what happened to him after his explosive beginning to 2009. Looks like he’s back!

Tony Stewart – Of course. The winner of the race who I don’t think even led a lap until 2 to go! As a matter of fact, according to NASCAR.com, he took final lead on lap 99 of 100. Amazing!!

As a huge Tony Stewart fan since my rookie year, 2004, I have to say that this was probably one of my top three favorite moments. First being Tony’s second championship in 2005 and probably a tie between his first Indy win and his first Talladega win last year.

At first, there were really no tears, just a lot of screaming. The tears came later. It finally sank in- Tony really won! He finally pulled that number 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy into victory lane! When he stood up on that car and held his arms up in the classic victory pose, I lost it.

I admit it, I’ve developed a reputation for getting really emotional over race wins, I just can’t help it. It all started last season. After an overwhelmingly bad start to the 2008 season for my top three (Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, and Greg Biffle), I was pretty frustrated. Then Greg Biffle won Loudon and I pretty much lost it. Then he won Dover.

All the emotions and frustrations of the season, watching your drivers have bad luck, accidents, and get basically cheated out of wins and then to finally have one of my top three (who are all basically tied in my mind) win not just once but twice in a row, it was pretty emotional for me.

Fast forward to Phoenix 2009 and Mark Martin leads the field. I mean he KILLED it that night. When he led the field to the green in the final segment of the race (and I’m getting a little teary eyed right now), I was shaking! The tears flowed and flowed all night.

Of course Tony’s win on Saturday was just the icing on the cake of this season! If he doesn’t win another race this season, it will be enough for me!

Congratulations to Tony, Gene Haas, Darian Grubb, and the entire #14 team on their amazing win at Lowes Motor Speedway!!!

Stewart’s Admiration for Martin Shines

Tony Stewart may have been one of those guys the media feared but tonight, he handled his runner up finish to veteran Mark Martin with class and style.

20090417em2965“The last three weeks have been amazing- its been so much fun. We’ve been in contention,” Stewart said after the race during a media interview. “There’s no shame in losing to a guy like Mark Martin tonight. I mean, I don’t think there is anybody that’s not a Mark Martin fan.”

Kind of makes you wonder though if there is shame in losing to anyone else? Tony goes on to say:

“It was an awesome night for our organization and an awesome night for Mark and I’m really happy for him.”

Stewart seems to have matured a lot, especially when it comes to dealing with the media. He gracefully handled things tonight which probably earned him a lot more respect from fans. Either way it is easy to see that not only has Tony grown and matured but he holds only the highest respect for Mark Martin.

Win too much??

Alright. I know you guys have gotten used to me and my funny posts (at least I think they’re funny) but I want to get serious here for a few.

I’m sure most, if not all, of my readers know that I am pretty much anti-Kyle Busch and anti-Jimmie Johnson. For the record, yes I do have a mad crush on Jimmie but his arrogance makes me angry.

In the past I’ve been accused of hating these guys because…they win too much? Now I am sorry but that is just ridiculous! For one thing, how can anyone hate someone that wins a lot? Also, how can anyone win too much? Sure, it gets old seeing the same face up in Victory Lane each week but that is negligible to me. For the most part. What bothers me is ungracious winners and sore losers!

A lot of people have been saying that Kyle’s matured this year since he’s been with Gibbs but I beg to differ. Did anyone happen to watch the Nationwide series opener at Daytona?

If you didn’t or if you did and don’t remember, here’s a recap.

Sure, I could be biased here but lets review shall we?

Tony raced him hard. He raced Kyle the way he should race him in the Cup series, but doesn’t. Needless to say, Kyle didn’t seem at all happy with the way Tony raced him that day but you know what? I doubt he’d have treated Tony any differently. That’s how it goes guys.

The worst part about this was, after a nice top five finish (Kyle got 4th), he pitched a fit, left his car parked in the grass and took off! Seriously, how old are you again?

And how about this one?

I don’t think I really need to elaborate on that one, Kyle Busch did everything in his power to make himself look like a royal dunce. Um. Hello? This is BRISTOL, Kyle. That’s how everyone races.

And there, my friends, I have presented you with two valid reasons to not like Kyle Busch.

As for winning too much? Hmm…lets look at stats:

Kyle Busch in 2008: 8 wins. I hate him

Carl Edwards in 2008: 9 wins. I don’t hate him. And no I don’t like Carl more because of what he did to Kyle at Bristol. I’m not much of a Carl fan at all, I just don’t hate him. I’m pretty much neutral to him (well unless he’s in a sleeveless shirt and I can see his sexy, sexy arms).

Jimmie Johnson. Well there’s a lot of things I haven’t forgiven this guy for but winning 3 championships in a row is hardly something to be upset over. I think this guy has to be one of the most ungracious winners I have ever seen. Its one thing to celebrate, its another to say “this is for all the haters”. And the day he said that is the day I became a hater.

I always say this, there’s only one thing worse than a sore loser- an ungracious winner!

You, the people, have spoken, and I have answered. Here is what you wanted to see.

Rogaine3_enlarge 10. Rogaine and Kevin Harvick-

 harvick_rogaine

Do I really need to elaborate?

waffle 9. Waffle House and Greg Biffle- Because, let’s face it, a Biffle sounds like something you’d order at a Waffle House.

slimfast 8. Slim Fast and Tony Stewart- I love Tony but the man seems to have an up and down relationship with weight loss.

aflac 7. Aflac and Joey Logano- Yes I know they’re Carl’s sponsor but the way this kid’s been smackin the wall, he’s gunna need that insurance.

trojan 6. Trojan Condoms and Casey Mears- Because as cute as she is, we don’t need another one of these:

2008 NASCAR Texas

gillette 5. Gillette and these guys-

jimmie_hair brian_hair tony_hair elliott

ad__Invisalign-Logo 4. InvisAlign and Brad Keselowski- Now I like the kid, don’t get me wrong, but he’s got a severe overbite that makes it kind of hard to take him really seriously when he’s on TV.

bk 3. Burger King and Kasey Kahne- Because the boy needs to put on some weight.

Logo-coppertone-com 2. Coppertone Sunscreen and Clint Bowyer- Have you ever noticed that this man can’t spend 5 minutes in the sun without his face becoming totally red?

bandaid 1. Band-Aid and Jimmie Johnson- Ahh yeah, the man that surfs on golf carts and jams kitchen knives into his fingers. Way to go Jimmie. Way. To. Go.

*Thanks to Naomi for the Band-Aid suggestion*

Tony's Butt Fetish

Posted by Genna | Posted in , , , | Posted on 2/15/2009

1

A few years back in what is now known as the NASCAR Nationwide series, someone captured a video of Tony Stewart making a interesting move on Kevin Harvick. And poor Kevin, he never saw it coming. I guess you have to be pretty comfortable with your manhood to pull this on Kevin Harvick.

And then there’s this. I’ll let the picture speak for itself, but no, Tony and Casey aren’t holding hands.

What happened during the Gatorade Duel edition of NASCAR Raceday didn’t help matters. During an on camera interview with racing legend, Bill Elliott, Tony walked right up behind him and smacked him on the butt.

I think, though, that this goes far beyond being secure in one’s manhood. It seems that Tony has a bit of a butt fetish. And apparently, men aren’t the only targets. Tony’s been rumored to have grabbed NASCAR pit reporter Wendy Venturini’s rear end as well.

Does he go too far?

Top Rivalries for 2009

Top Rivalries for 2009

Its that time of year again, you know when you start doodling little hearts on your school notebooks and sticky notes at work and penciling the words Daytona, NASCAR, and the names of your favorite drivers in the center of them. Ironic isn’t it how Daytona falls the day after Valentine’s day this year?

Well I have a list of a few boys who won’t be passing out chocolates and cards to each other this year. I present to you my predictions for the top NASCAR driver rivalries of 2009.

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch. We know these two aren’t the best of friends and they don’t seem to want to patch things up either. I think that they’ll probably want to kill each other again this year. It’ll probably be on track scuffles though, I think that Shrub is probably a little too wimpy to get into a physical altercation with Dale Jr. and Junior is just too apathetic.

2. Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin. It was clear to see that even while teammates, their relationship was strained. Denny’s a hotheaded idiot and Tony’s not much better. Denny has been known to trash talk his stubborn teammate and Tony has never been known to take a verbal beating. I think I can safely assure you that now that they aren’t teammates, they won’t be so civil to one another.

3. Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards. After their little confrontation in the garage after the fall race at Lowes Motor Speedway, the pair said they’d talked and patched things up but Kevin Harvick can hold a grudge. I really don’t think that they’re all nice and friendly now even though they may be forced to be civil to each other for the media.

4. Kasey Kahne and the security guy. That one will come back to haunt him, for sure.

Ok, so number 4 is kind of a joke but you get my drift. NASCAR drivers are full of energy and emotions, especially after a wreck and a lot of them don’t think it’s a good idea to sit back and cool down before confronting another driver. Not to mention lots of them don’t even review the videos before they go ahead and spout the blame all over the place. But if nothing else its pure entertainment for the fans.

My Top 10 Predictions for 2009

Ten Predictions for 2009

These are my top ten predictions for 2009. If they don’t happen, I guess I’ll have to eat my words, but from watching these drivers and their teams, I think I’m on the right track for the most part. So in no particular order, my top 10 predictions for 2009.

Tony Stewart will win. I know it sounds farfetched and ridiculous after his performance in 2008 but I honestly believe he will overcome everything and win a race this season. Think about the Hendrick power he’s got under the hood and the millions he’s put into Stewart Haas Racing. He will win and he will do it in the first half of the season.

Mark Martin will be a Chase contender. I know a lot of you may be thinking “what? Martin? But he’s old and crusty!” and that may very well be but do you recall the 2007 Daytona 500? This man is still contending for race wins! The man can drive and again, he’s got that Hendrick power under the hood. Now that he’s *thankfully* out of DEI, I believe he’ll be well able to prove to the fans just how great a race he really is.

Joey Logano isn’t going to quite live up to all the hype. They call him the greatest thing since sliced bread, or just plain old Sliced Bread for short, but is Joey Logano at 18 years old really ready for the Cup series? He started three races in the 96 car last season and he didn’t run very well in any of them. I don’t think that one season in the Nationwide series is enough. He probably needs at least another season or two under his belt before making it to the big leagues. But what do I know? I’m just a fan.

Greg Biffle will also be a Chase contender. He might even win that elusive championship and make NASCAR history by becoming the first driver to win a championship in all three of NASCAR’s top series. In the 2008 season he killed ‘em with back to back wins at Dover and NHIS, proving that he was not one to be counted out yet. In the last ten races of the season known as the Chase, Biffle had plenty to smile about. He finished 3rd in the 3rd chase race at Kansas, but got taken out by his teammate, Edwards at Talladega. He went on to finish 7th at Charlotte, 12th at Martinsville, 10th in Atlanta, 5th at Texas, 11th at Phoenix, and had some bad luck in the season finale at Homestead-Miami where he finished 18th. But in those last 10 races, he had a very impressive resume with 4 top 5’s and 6 top 10’s total. He’s easily one of NASCAR’s most underrated drivers.

Jimmie Johnson won’t win his 4th championship in a row. News flash: Its never been done. It never will be done. Not in our lifetime. 3 Champs in a row is impressive but lets see you get 200 career wins, oh Jimmie dear.

The DEI-Ganassi merger will crash and burn. Two failing organizations with sub par drivers that have both lost the best they had to offer and they expect that by merging it will fix all their problems? Think again guys. But at least we can say they went down swinging, right? I’m not wishing harm on them, just calling it how I see it.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will make his great comeback. The boy will win races, contend for the championship and keep his car in the top 5, at the very least. And as if the man wasn’t popular enough, he will grow even more in popularity. He’ll probably win NASCAR’s most popular driver, again. I predict he’ll have may one DNF, but no more than that. As for race wins, I’m thinking at least 2-3, probably more.

Jeff Gordon will win a race. And he’ll probably win more than one. Every driver has to have a season where they’re a little off but last year, Gordon was way off. He did not win one race last season and I think it probably motivated him even more to try that much harder this year to win. I believe he’s a top contender for the Chase again this year and he will be very determined and motivated.

We’ll have a very unexpected first time winner. Whether its someone like Aric Almirola with a couple of partial seasons under his belt or Reed Sorenson in his new number 43 car, someone is going to come out if this season with a surprising victory.

There will be a first time champ. Whether it be Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Dale Jr., or Mark Martin, there won’t be a repeat champion this year.

Remember these are simply my opinions. You don't have to agree with them and if you don't, I really don't care. If you do, then cool for you.

Fly High or Crash and Burn?

Tony Stewart is a rookie. You’re probably scratching your head since the 37 year old is a two time NASCAR series champion with more than 30 wins, over a hundred top fives under his belt and more than 10 years experience in the series. But Tony Stewart has entered a branch of the biz he knows little to nothing about. Team ownership. At least NASCAR Cup Series team ownership.

Those are two very frightening words for anyone, let alone a driver who plans on moonlighting as an owner. He’s been optimistic, though, and anyone can see why. While he left a wonderful organization to start a new career path with a sub par race team, it has potential.

The 70 team hasn’t had a very good track record with Stewart-Haas Racing, formerly called Haas CNC Racing, but Stewart still remains optimistic. It sometimes seems like he can climb into anything and put it in Victory Lane. "We wouldn't have taken this opportunity if we didn't think it was realistic to be in the Chase and have an opportunity of winning races and winning the championship," said Stewart. "Now whether that happens or not, obviously that will wait to be seen. We feel like we have the tools in place to do that, and ... I don't think all these guys would have come together if we didn't feel like we had the opportunity and resources to do that."

The 70 and 66 no longer exist now. They’ve become the 14 and the 39. Stewart chose the number 14 in honor of one of his own racing heroes, AJ Foyt. Ryan Newman will join Stewart at SHR in the number 39 with the US Army as one of his primary sponsors, while Stewart will be sponsored by Old Spice, Office Depot, and Burger King. Its been speculated that Newman will also be sponsored by Burger King for a few races.

Stewart isn’t the only one who’s optimistic about SHR’s chances this coming season. "I really think we're going to hit the ground running," said Darian Grubb, who left series giant Hendrick Motorsports to become Stewart’s crew chief. "I think we're going to go down [to Daytona], and we're going to be very competitive. We're ready to go to Daytona now. We're itching for the time we get to go be on the race track and let all this preparation pay off for us."

So will SHR crash and burn? Or will we see this organization that one year ago could never have dreamed of being a championship contender become on of the greatest in the NASCAR Cup Series? All of that still remains to be seen but there’s most definitely a much greater chance that SHR will succeed.
